VFS Global’s Platinum Lounge: Monetising Visa Anxiety for Profit from Applicants

The issue starts with VFS Global’s dominant position in visa outsourcing. VFS holds visa outsourcing contracts with 71 governments, meaning applicants often have to use its centres to submit visa applications. This creates a captive audience with limited alternatives for accessing basic visa-related services.

VFS has expanded its paid services, offering premium appointments, lounges, document services, SMS updates, courier returns and other add-ons for additional fees. The Platinum Lounge is another such service, marketed as a luxury and comfort offering.

A 2026 investigation by Lighthouse Reports and 14 media partners found aggressive, and at times dishonest, upselling of premium services. According to the investigation, VFS Global’s profit grew fourfold between 2017 and 2024, while applications increased by only 15%. This raises questions about the growing role of paid add-on services in the company’s business model.

The concern is not simply charging for optional services, but how they are presented. Terms such as “premium”, “priority” and “platinum” can create an impression that paying more may mean faster or preferential visa processing, even though these services do not determine visa outcomes. For applicants already dealing with uncertainty, such messaging can amplify anxiety and encourage additional spending. The Platinum Lounge is therefore less an innovation than another example of the growing monetisation of visa services. The key questions are whether applicants receive clear choices, transparent pricing and genuine value when they have limited alternatives.
